Yes, you can visit the Cotswolds without a car in winter, as long as you pick the right corner of it, plan around one bus route and avoid the Christmas shutdown. The Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and Cheltenham corridor works well by train and bus, even on Sundays. Woodstock and Blenheim are easy from Oxford. Almost everywhere else needs a weekday timetable, a pre-booked taxi or a tour.
- Easiest car-free route: the train from London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh (about 1h25–1h35), then the Pulhams 801 bus to Stow and Bourton. It runs hourly Monday to Saturday and, on the current timetable, roughly hourly on Sundays too.
- Sunday warning: most other village buses (802, 855, 606, W, Stagecoach 1/2 to Chipping Campden, Faresaver 95 to Castle Combe) do not run on Sundays.
- Christmas warning: there are no GWR trains anywhere on 25 and 26 December 2026. Engineering work at Dolphin Junction near Slough then stops all GWR trains to and from London Paddington from Sunday 27 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, so use Chiltern Railways from Marylebone to Oxford and change there. GWR trains also can't use Paddington on 28–29 November 2026. Expect no local buses on 25 December, 26 December or 1 January.
- Bus fares: single fares on participating English buses are capped at £3 until 31 December 2026. In July 2026 the government announced a £2 cap for 2027, reported to start on 1 January.
- Daylight: in December the sun sets at roughly 4pm. Plan to be on your last bus by dusk, not on a muddy footpath.

How to read this: "Easy" means you can do it on any day, including Sundays, with no taxi. "Doable" means fine Monday to Saturday if you plan around a timetable. "Hard" means a handful of buses a day and none on Sundays, so book a taxi or join a tour.

Getting there by train
The Cotswold Line from Paddington
GWR's Cotswold Line runs London Paddington – Reading – Oxford – Hanborough – Charlbury – Kingham – Moreton-in-Marsh – Evesham – Worcester. Direct trains run roughly hourly for most of the day. The fastest Paddington–Moreton journeys take about 1h25, and most take around 1h30. Moreton-in-Marsh is the most useful station because the 801 bus stops right outside it.
- Charlbury suits a quiet, walkable stone-village base. The S3A bus links it to Woodstock and Oxford.
- Kingham is tiny and rural. The 802 bus to Stow runs only a few times on weekdays and on Saturdays, with none on Sundays.
- Hanborough is the closest station to Blenheim Palace, about two miles away. In winter we'd still take the S3 bus from Oxford instead of walking unlit roads.
Other gateways
- Cheltenham Spa: the start of the 801, plus the 51 to Cirencester and the 606 and W towards Winchcombe and Broadway.
- Kemble: the station for Cirencester, about four miles away. Check local buses or pre-book a taxi.
- Stroud: useful for Painswick and the southern Cotswolds, but bus links are thin. Check traveline.
- Oxford: frequent trains and the S3 to Woodstock and Chipping Norton.
- Stratford-upon-Avon: Stagecoach 1/2 to Chipping Campden, Broadway and Moreton. Some Go Cotswolds tours, including Cotswolds in a Day, also start here.
- Chippenham: for Castle Combe on the Faresaver 95.
- Bath Spa: for the southern Cotswolds, mostly by tour, not local bus.
Fares and money-saving tips
- Advance singles on Paddington–Moreton can be very cheap if booked early, while walk-up Anytime fares are much higher. Treat all prices as approximate, because they change.
- Railcards (16–25, 26–30, Two Together, Senior, Family & Friends, Disabled Persons) generally save a third on eligible fares. Two Together is excellent value for couples.
- Off-peak rules: on weekdays, off-peak travel from London typically begins after the morning peak, and weekends are off-peak all day. Restrictions vary by ticket, so check them when you book.
- Cotswolds Discoverer: a one-day ticket last published at £15 adult and £7.50 child (£10 with an eligible railcard), so check the current price before you buy. It covers GWR trains between Oxford and Moreton-in-Marsh plus some other Cotswold lines, and Stagecoach West buses only. It is not valid on trains leaving before 08:50 on weekdays, and it does not cover Pulhams buses, so it won't pay for the 801. With bus singles capped at £3 (and a £2 cap announced for 2027), it usually only pays off if you're doing Oxford–Moreton by rail plus several Stagecoach journeys.
Book rail tickets on GWR's or National Rail's site, or any rail booking app; the fare rules are the same everywhere.
GWR trains will not run to or from London Paddington on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026, and again from Sunday 27 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 (there are no GWR trains at all on Christmas Day and Boxing Day), according to National Rail's Dolphin Junction page. During the Christmas closure the advice is to travel between London Marylebone and Oxford on Chiltern Railways and change at Oxford for trains towards Worcester. GWR had not published an Oxford–Worcester timetable for those dates when we checked (TBC), so check closer to the time.
The key bus routes explained
Pulhams 801: Cheltenham – Bourton – Stow – Moreton – Chipping Norton
This is the backbone of car-free Cotswolds travel. On the timetable valid from May 2026:
- Monday–Saturday: roughly hourly. On weekdays the last bus leaves Cheltenham at 20:30 and reaches Moreton station at about 21:40. The last bus from Moreton station towards Stow and Bourton leaves at about 21:40.
- Sundays and public holidays: roughly hourly from about 08:30 until late afternoon. On Sundays the last bus from Cheltenham that reaches Moreton leaves at 16:30; later Sunday departures stop at Bourton. The last Sunday bus from Moreton station to Stow and Bourton leaves at about 18:45. Check exact Sunday return times from Stow and Bourton to Moreton before you set out.
- Journey times: Moreton to Stow about 15 minutes; Moreton to Bourton about 30 minutes; Bourton to Cheltenham about 55 minutes.
- Not running: Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day (see below).
Pulhams 802: Kingham station – Stow – Rissingtons – Bourton
A handful of journeys, some timed to meet London trains, on weekdays and Saturdays. There is no Sunday service. It's handy if your train stops at Kingham but not Moreton, but don't build a day around it.
Pulhams 855: Bourton – Northleach – Bibury – Cirencester
This is the bus to Bibury. It runs roughly hourly in the daytime, Monday to Saturday, with nothing on Sundays. Bibury to Cirencester takes about 18–20 minutes, and the last bus from Bibury towards Cirencester is around 17:30. Pulhams says the 855 follows Gloucestershire school term dates, so times can shift in the holidays.
Stagecoach 51: Cheltenham – Cirencester – Swindon
Hourly Monday to Saturday, and about every two hours on Sundays. It's the easiest way to reach Cirencester from Cheltenham, then pick up the 855 to Bibury on weekdays.
Stagecoach W and Pulhams 606: Cheltenham to Winchcombe, Broadway and Chipping Campden
- W (Cheltenham – Prestbury – Winchcombe): roughly hourly Monday to Saturday, with the last weekday departure from Cheltenham around 19:10. There is no service on Sundays or public holidays.
- 606 (Cheltenham – Bishop's Cleeve – Winchcombe – Broadway – Chipping Campden): about every two hours, Monday to Saturday only.
Stagecoach 1/2: Stratford – Chipping Campden – Broadway – Moreton
These run every 1.5–3 hours, Monday to Saturday only. The last bus back to Moreton from Chipping Campden leaves around 18:00.
Stagecoach S3/S3A: Oxford – Woodstock – Chipping Norton / Charlbury
From Oxford railway station, buses to Woodstock (Blenheim) run about every 30 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, taking roughly 35 minutes. The Sunday service is roughly hourly (TBC). The timetable has been valid since 20 September 2026.
Faresaver 95/95A: Chippenham – Castle Combe
Only three or four journeys a day, with nothing on Sundays, and the last return is late afternoon. Castle Combe is the classic place where a taxi or tour makes more sense.
Sunday and bank holiday warnings, including Christmas and New Year 2026/27
Sundays: the 801, 51 and S3 run on Sundays, and almost nothing else that matters to visitors does. If your trip includes a Sunday, spend it on the Moreton–Stow–Bourton–Cheltenham corridor or in Woodstock, and save Bibury, Winchcombe, Chipping Campden and Broadway for a weekday.
Christmas and New Year 2026/27: no operator had published festive bus timetables by mid-October 2026. The bus columns below follow last year's pattern, which is the best guide we have; the train column uses the published 2026/27 engineering dates.
| Date | Trains (GWR) | Pulhams buses (801, 802, 855, 606) | Stagecoach West (51, W) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu 24 Dec | Running, earlier finish; Paddington open | Mostly normal (2025 pattern) | Saturday timetable, early finish about 6pm (2025 pattern) |
| Fri 25 Dec | No trains | No buses | No buses |
| Sat 26 Dec | No trains | No 801/802/855/606 (2025 pattern) | No 51 or W (2025 pattern) |
| Sun 27 Dec – Sun 3 Jan | Reduced service; no GWR to or from Paddington; use Marylebone–Oxford | Weekend/Saturday timetables (TBC) | Mostly normal or Saturday timetables (TBC) |
| Thu 31 Dec | As above | Saturday timetable on 801/802/855 (2025 pattern) | Saturday timetable (2025 pattern) |
| Fri 1 Jan | Running (no Paddington) | No 801/802/855/606 (2025 pattern) | No 51 or W (2025 pattern) |
In plain English, you cannot do a car-free Cotswolds day on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day. If you're staying over Christmas, choose a hotel or inn with a restaurant you can walk to, and pre-book any taxis weeks ahead.
Taxis: pre-book, don't hope
- There is no reliable taxi rank at Moreton-in-Marsh or Kingham stations. Book before you travel, especially for evening arrivals and Sundays.
- Approximate fares quoted by local firms are about £12–£17 for Moreton to Stow and £18–£30 for Moreton to Bourton. Expect surcharges on Sundays, public holidays and late at night, and treat all prices as approximate.
- Uber: ride-hailing coverage in the rural Cotswolds is patchy at best (TBC), so book a local firm if you need to be somewhere on time. A driver who accepts in Cheltenham may be 30 minutes away.
- Tip: ask your accommodation for their trusted local taxi number when you book. Small firms often have only one or two cars.
Best car-free bases for winter
- Moreton-in-Marsh (best overall): direct trains to London and Oxford, the 801 from the station, buses to Chipping Campden and Broadway, and Go Cotswolds tours such as Cotswolds in a Day pick up at the station. Look for inns and B&Bs on the High Street within 10 minutes' walk of the station.
- Cheltenham (best for Sundays and evenings): a proper town with restaurants open late, frequent trains, and buses in every direction, including the 801 on Sundays. It's also a good base for Sudeley.
- Stow-on-the-Wold or Bourton-on-the-Water (most atmospheric): both are on the 801 and both are full of pubs with rooms. Stow is more of a winter-evening town; Bourton is quieter at night out of season.
- Charlbury or Kingham (quiet and rural): on the railway, but with thin buses. Best if you plan to walk and take trains, not tour villages.
- Cirencester: good for Bibury on weekdays and for the 51, but Kemble station is four miles away.
If you'd like to treat yourself, several Cotswolds spa hotels are a short taxi ride from a station.
Three sample car-free winter day plans
Plan 1: Moreton, Bourton, the Slaughters and Stow (Mon–Sat; Sunday possible but tighter)
- Morning: train to Moreton-in-Marsh, then the 801 to Bourton-on-the-Water (about 30 minutes).
- Late morning: walk the field path to Lower Slaughter (about 1.5 miles), then along the River Eye to Upper Slaughter (about 1 mile). Wear waterproof boots, because this is mud country in winter.
- Lunch: walk back to Bourton, or carry on towards Stow only if you have plenty of daylight and a good map.
- Afternoon: the 801 to Stow-on-the-Wold for antiques shops and a pub fire.
- Back: the 801 to Moreton for your train. On a Sunday, aim for an afternoon bus from Bourton or Stow towards Moreton, and check the exact time.
Plan 2: Cheltenham, Winchcombe and Sudeley's Spectacle of Light (Mon–Sat)
- Daytime: take the Stagecoach W from Cheltenham to Winchcombe, then walk part of the Winchcombe Way or explore the town.
- Evening: Sudeley Castle's Spectacle of Light 2026 ("Alice's Amazing Adventures in Wonderland") runs on selected evenings from 20 November to 30 December 2026. Entry slots run from 4.45pm, with last entry at 7.15pm, and tickets must be bought in advance, because none are sold at the castle.
- Getting back: the castle is a short but unlit walk from the town centre, and the last W bus is early evening (TBC). Pre-book a taxi back to Cheltenham. Avoid Sunday dates, when there is no W bus at all.
- For the other light trails, and how easy each is to reach without a car, see our Cotswolds Christmas light trails comparison, or what's on in the Cotswolds in November.
Plan 3: Oxford, Woodstock and Blenheim (any day, including Sundays)
- Morning: train to Oxford, then the S3 from Oxford station to Woodstock (about 35 minutes).
- Daytime: Blenheim Palace and park, followed by lunch in Woodstock's old coaching inns.
- Evening: Christmas at Blenheim runs Friday 13 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, open 10am–8pm. It is a separately ticketed event (a new listing on GetYourGuide, with no reviews yet), and the Christmas Market runs from 13 November to 20 December 2026. The S3 runs into the evening, so this is the easiest after-dark light trail to do without a car.
For a longer stay, string these plans together over two or three days.
Walking between villages in winter
The Cotswolds is wonderful on foot, but winter changes the maths.
- Mud is guaranteed. Field paths around Bourton, the Slaughters and Stow become sticky clay after rain. Wear waterproof boots, not trainers.
- Daylight is short. With sunset around 4pm in December, start any walk by late morning and finish by 3.30pm. Our guide to the weather and daylight in December has the sunset times and a packing list.
- Lanes are unlit, and many have no verges or pavements. Never plan to walk back along a road after dark, and carry a head torch anyway.
- Good short winter walks: Bourton to Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter (about 2.5 miles one way); Moreton to Batsford Arboretum (about 1.5 miles; check the arboretum's winter opening); Stow to the Slaughters (about 3–4 miles, best on a dry day).
- Broadway to Chipping Campden on the Cotswold Way, via Broadway Tower and Dover's Hill, is about 6 hilly miles. It's beautiful, but only for confident walkers on a dry day, with the 606 or Stagecoach 1/2 bus times noted for the return.
For what the weather is like through the year, see our guide to the best time to visit the Cotswolds.
When to give up and book a tour instead
Book a tour if:
- you have only one day and want more than two villages;
- your free day is a Sunday and you want Bibury, Castle Combe, Chipping Campden or Broadway;
- you want to see the southern Cotswolds (Castle Combe, Lacock, Tetbury) without a car;
- it's 27 December to 3 January, when trains are disrupted and buses run reduced services.
Tours from Moreton-in-Marsh station. Go Cotswolds picks up in the station car park at 9.30am and usually drops off back at the station around 5pm, using 16-seat minibuses. Its Cotswolds in a Day tour is listed at roughly £75–£90 per adult on its own site and from $114 on GetYourGuide, where it is rated 4.9 from more than 470 reviews. Go Cotswolds also runs a Bath and Southern Cotswolds tour and Christmas-themed tours, booked on its own site. Check winter operating days.
Tours from London. If you don't want to deal with trains at all, a small-group day such as Go Tours UK's Full-Day Cotswolds Small-Group Tour (from $105, rated 4.8 from more than 5,300 reviews) picks you up in South Kensington and covers Burford, Bibury, Bourton and Stow. Compare the options in Cotswolds day trip from London in winter: best tours compared.
Visiting for the festive markets? Many of them, such as Moreton, Cheltenham and Bath, are reachable by public transport. See our Cotswolds Christmas markets 2026 guide for dates and transport.
