For most people, the best winter Cotswolds day trip from London is a small-group minibus tour that goes straight to three or four villages and gets you home by about 6pm. Our top pick is Go Tours UK's small-group Cotswolds tour from South Kensington. The other good option is to take the train to Moreton-in-Marsh and join Go Cotswolds' local day tour (its own site lists it from about £75, plus your fare). Coach combo tours that add Oxford, Stratford or Warwick are good value, but in winter the Cotswolds part often shrinks to a view through the window.

  • Best overall: a small-group tour (16 people at most) that visits only the Cotswolds. You get three or four villages in daylight; anything promising more than that in December is selling you dusk.
  • Best value and most local: the train from Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh (fastest 1h24m) plus Go Cotswolds' "Cotswolds in a Day". In late November and December, its Christmas market tours (£80) are the festive pick.
  • Skip in winter: big multi-stop combos where the Cotswolds is a drive-through, and tours that start with Oxford and leave the villages until after 3pm, when the light is already going.

Four villages (Burford, Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold) in a 16-seat minibus, back in South Kensington by about 5:45pm. That return time is what makes it work in winter: the day is planned around the daylight, not stretched to a sixth stop.

Can you really do the Cotswolds as a day trip in winter?

Yes, but you have to plan around the light, not the clock. These are London sunrise and sunset times; in the Cotswolds villages the sun sets a few minutes later.

The Cotswolds start about 80–100 miles west of London, and most tours take two to two and a half hours to reach the first village, depending on traffic. On a typical 8:15–8:30am departure from Victoria or South Kensington, the first 90 minutes or so go on the A40/M40 crawl out of west London, and you won't step off the bus until around 10:30–11am.

In late November or December that leaves about five hours of usable light. Our rule of thumb:

  • Three villages is comfortable.
  • Four villages works if one stop is short (Bibury only needs 30–45 minutes).
  • Five or more stops in December means the last one is in the dark. That is lovely if there are Christmas lights, less so if you wanted photos of Arlington Row.

February is noticeably kinder: by late February you have gained well over an hour of afternoon light compared with mid-December. For what is open and closed in the darkest weeks, see our guide to the Cotswolds in November; for what the weather feels like and what to wear, see what to expect on a winter tour below.

The picks reviewed

1. Go Tours UK: Full-Day Cotswolds Small-Group Tour (best overall)

This is the tour we'd book for a first winter visit. Go Tours UK's small-group tour meets at a coffee shop in South Kensington (Urban Baristas, 44 Harrington Road), where you can use the toilet before you leave. Check-in is 8:15am and the minibus leaves by 8:25am. It is a 16-seat minibus with a driver-guide, and the route covers Burford, Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold before you're back at about 5:45pm. That return time matters in winter, because the stops are kept to the daylight window instead of squeezing in a sixth. On GetYourGuide it is listed as "From London: Full-Day Cotswolds Small-Group Tour" and rated 4.8 from more than 5,300 reviews when we checked.

  • Pros: a small group of 16 at most; four classic stops; a minibus can use lanes coaches can't; a convenient Tube meeting point.
  • Cons: lunch not included; free time in each village, not guided village walks; not suitable for children under 7.
  • Winter note: Go Tours says its day tours run in all seasons. Confirm your date in the booking calendar.

2. Go Cotswolds: Cotswolds in a Day, by train from Paddington (best small group and best value)

This is the clever winter alternative. Instead of sitting in a minibus on the A40, you take a direct GWR train from London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh (fastest 1h24m), and Go Cotswolds' guide meets you in the station car park at 9:30am. The train to catch is the direct GWR service leaving Paddington at around 07:50 and arriving at Moreton-in-Marsh at around 09:18; check the live timetable. You're back at the station by 5pm.

The Cotswolds in a Day itinerary covers the Dover's Hill viewpoint, Chipping Campden, a quiet "secret" village (often Snowshill), Stow-on-the-Wold, Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water. Go Cotswolds' own prices are £75–£90 for adults and £65–£85 for children aged 3–15; on GetYourGuide it is rated 4.9 from more than 470 reviews and starts from $114. Go Cotswolds says Cotswolds in a Day and its Secret Cotswolds tour both run throughout December. In wet weather the guides may drop the muddy Dover's Hill stop, which is a sensible winter call.

  • Pros: local guides who live in the area; more time in the villages because there is no London traffic; souvenir maps; cancellable up to 24 hours before.
  • Cons: you pay the train fare on top; you need to be at Paddington before 8am; no children under 3.
  • Ticket tip: the early departure is a peak-time train on weekdays. Either book an Advance ticket on that specific train, or follow Go Cotswolds' advice and buy a flexible ticket so a late return doesn't strand you. Booking 6–8 weeks ahead gets the best prices.

If you'd rather stay over, Moreton-in-Marsh makes a good base, with the station, pubs and the 801 bus to Stow and Bourton on the doorstep.

3. Golden Tours: The Cotswolds with Lunch (best budget)

For a big-coach day where the food is sorted, this is the one. According to Visit London it departs Victoria at 8:30am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. You visit Burford, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water, with a two-course lunch at The Old New Inn and entry to the 1930s Model Village included. Prices start from about £89. We could not find this tour on GetYourGuide; it is sold on Golden Tours' own site. The closest lunch-included day on GetYourGuide is Premium Tours' Cotswolds tour with optional lunch (pick 4).

  • Pros: lunch and an indoor attraction (useful in rain) included; good value; three stops is the right number for winter.
  • Cons: a full-size coach; the drop-off is Gloucester Road, not Victoria; at least one review mentions a 15-minute walk from the coach park into the village.
  • Winter note: don't confuse this with Golden Tours' Bath & Cotswolds tour, which Visit London lists as running April to September only. Confirm winter dates for the lunch tour when booking.

4. Premium Tours: Lunch in the Cotswolds (best pub lunch)

Premium Tours' Cotswolds day with optional lunch leaves Victoria Coach Station (Gate 19–20) at 8:15am, and GetYourGuide lists it as an 11-hour day. Its usual route covers Burford, Bibury and Stow-on-the-Wold, with an optional two-course lunch at The Swan Hotel, a 17th-century coaching inn on the River Coln in Bibury, which on a cold day is exactly where you want to be. Some reseller listings say the coach skips Bibury from 24 September to 12 December 2026 for road maintenance and moves lunch to Burford, so check the stop list for your date before you book. Premium Tours lists an adult price of £99 on its own site, with 10% off selected dates; on GetYourGuide it starts from $106 and is rated 4.6 from more than 1,600 reviews. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

  • Pros: Bibury is a highlight when it is on the route; the lunch venue is atmospheric; the departure is right by Victoria.
  • Cons: a coach-sized group; food options in Bibury are limited if you skip the lunch option. For more detail, see our full review of this tour.

5. Evan Evans: Villages of the Cotswolds Small-Group Tour

Evan Evans' Villages of the Cotswolds tour leaves 258 Vauxhall Bridge Road at 8:30am, visits Bibury, Burford and Bourton-on-the-Water, and finishes near Victoria at about 7pm. It costs from about £129 direct and from $112 on GetYourGuide, where it is rated 4.3 from more than 900 reviews.

  • Pros: only three villages, so longer stops; a smaller vehicle than the big coaches.
  • Cons: pricier than Go Tours UK for fewer stops; the 7pm return means part of the drive home is in the dark (normal in winter, but good to know); lunch not included.

6. Best combo: Oxford and the Cotswolds

Rabbie's Oxford & Traditional Cotswold Villages is a mini-coach of 16 people at most from Victoria's Greenline Coach Terminal. Pick-up is 9:15am and you're back at about 7pm. It covers free time in Oxford plus Bibury and Burford. Rabbie's own site lists it from about $133 with a 4.6/5 rating; on GetYourGuide it starts from $112 and is rated 4.6 from more than 1,900 reviews. A winter warning: the standard route does Oxford in the morning and the villages in the afternoon, and after 3:30pm in December that means dusk. Rabbie's says all Sunday departures run in reverse, villages first, so in winter a Sunday is the one to pick.

The cheaper Cotswolds & Oxford Guided Day-Trip on GetYourGuide leaves Gloucester Road at 7:30am sharp. You get 30 minutes in Burford and an hour in Bourton, then 2.5 hours in Oxford. It is rated 4.6 from more than 4,600 reviews and starts from $105. It is rushed in the Cotswolds, but it gets the villages done while it is light. Our Oxford and Cotswolds day trip guide covers this combination in more detail.

7. Combos to approach with caution in winter

  • Oxford, Stratford, Cotswolds & Warwick Castle (Golden Tours, from about £79 direct, from $105 on GetYourGuide, rated 4.4 from more than 880 reviews). Good value for Warwick Castle and Shakespeare's Birthplace, but the Cotswolds is described as a drive through the scenery, not a stop. In December the drive may be in fading light.
  • Stonehenge & Cotswolds (Golden Tours, from about £89; Monday, Wednesday and Sunday at 8:30am). The only Cotswolds stop is Bourton-on-the-Water. On GetYourGuide, the similar London: Stonehenge and Cotswolds Day Trip with Ticket is run by Day Tours London, rated 4.7 from 176 reviews and from $114.
  • Downton Abbey: Highclere, Bampton & Oxford (Premium Tours). Rated 4.7 from more than 670 reviews on GetYourGuide, from $207. Highclere Castle's own What's On page says general admission is only at Easter and in the summer holidays. In winter it opens only for ticketed events: Christmas at Highclere (18 November to 19 December 2026), Wintertime Tours in January 2027, Valentine's tours on 13 and 14 February 2027, and "Explore Downton & Tutankhamun" in February 2027. Tours that include Highclere can only run on those dates, so if the calendar is empty, that's why.
  • Blenheim Palace and the Cotswolds (from about £79 including palace entry). A good rainy-day combination, since much of the day is indoors. On GetYourGuide, The Cotswolds and Blenheim Palace from London is rated 4.4 from more than 850 reviews and starts from $105.

8. Best private: a driver-guide from London

If you're two to six people, a private car can cost the same per head as a small-group tour, and you choose the stops. You could add Castle Combe, go to Bibury first before the coaches arrive, or finish in a pub with a fire.

Typical quotes we found:

  • Accredited driver-guide tours at about £720 for one or two people, rising to £800 for six or seven. One operator offering this runs only from March to November, so check winter availability.
  • Chauffeur-only hire (no guiding) from about £726 for eight hours in an E-Class.
  • Marketplace private tours on Viator and GetYourGuide from roughly $503 to $1,743 per group on GetYourGuide. The Cotswolds private tour with driver on GetYourGuide starts from $697 per group and is rated 5.0, but from only 10 reviews, so read the recent feedback before booking.
  • If you'd rather start in the Cotswolds, Go Cotswolds offers a private version of Cotswolds in a Day from £1,000 for up to 16 people.
  • Pros: door to door; flexible; you can chase the light.
  • Cons: check whether you're getting a licensed guide or just a driver; one reviewer paid well over £1,000 for four and felt they got little more than a bus driver.

Festive tours: Christmas markets and light trails

Go Cotswolds: Christmas in the Cotswolds (£80 adults, £70 children) runs on 22 and 28 November and 5, 13 and 20 December 2026. Every date includes Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water. Most dates add a visit to Cirencester at Christmas; the 5 December date centres on Chipping Campden's Christmas market, which has some of the best lights in the area. It departs Moreton-in-Marsh station at 9:30am and is back by 5pm, so it is easy by train, but there are no GWR trains at Paddington on 28–29 November. It is booked on Go Cotswolds' own site. Our Christmas markets guide has the 2026 dates for each town.

Bath Christmas Market runs from 26 November to 13 December 2026. Go Cotswolds' Bath & Southern Cotswolds tour (£75–£85, from Moreton) includes the market on those dates. For Bath on its own, see our Bath and Stonehenge day trip guide.

Christmas Day: Golden Tours runs an Oxford, Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon tour with a traditional Christmas lunch on 25 December, leaving Victoria at 8am, from about £199 on its own site and from $240 on GetYourGuide (rated 4.2 from only 9 reviews there). It is a good answer to "what do we do on the 25th when London shuts?"

Blenheim Palace: the illuminated light trail runs on most dates from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. It takes about 90 minutes and is roughly 3km long. We couldn't find a London coach day trip that includes the light trail for 2026. The DIY route is a Chiltern train from Marylebone to Oxford, then the S3 bus. Tickets for Christmas at Blenheim Palace are sold on GetYourGuide from $33; it is a new listing there with few reviews so far. Our Christmas light trails guide compares Blenheim, Sudeley and Westonbirt, and our November guide covers the first Christmas markets.

Group coach, small group or private: which suits you?

  • Big coach (40–50+ seats): usually among the cheapest, often with lunch included. The downsides are slower loading, coach-park walks and fewer back lanes. Fine if you want an easy, sociable day.
  • Small group (8–16 seats): the best balance in winter. It is quicker at each stop, can use narrow lanes, and the driver-guide can adjust if fog or flooding closes a road. Expect to pay about £80–£130.
  • Private: the most expensive overall, but competitive per head for groups of four or more. It suits travellers with mobility needs, young children, or anyone who wants photos before the crowds.

DIY alternatives: train or car hire?

Train plus a local tour (recommended). Around 23 trains a day run from Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh, most of them direct, with a fastest time of 1h24m. Kingham, the station for Daylesford and Chipping Norton, is around 1h16m at fastest. Without a tour you'll struggle, because rural buses are sparse and sparser still in winter, so pair the train with Go Cotswolds or a local taxi. Fares vary hugely: Advance singles can be cheap, while walk-up Anytime fares are much higher, so book early.

Car hire gives you total freedom, but be realistic about it:

  • You'll be driving on the left, on single-track lanes with stone walls, and frost or ice is possible on higher roads like the A429 Fosse Way from December to February.
  • Parking in Bourton and Bibury fills up even in winter at weekends.
  • Escaping London by car costs the same 90 minutes the coach loses. If you hire a car, pick it up somewhere west of London, such as Oxford or Heathrow, not in central London.

Car hire makes most sense if you're staying two or three nights.

What to expect on a winter tour

  • Weather: grey, damp and colder than you might expect. Met Office 1991–2020 averages for Little Rissington (210m up, near Bourton and Stow) give daytime highs of about 6.5–7°C and lows of 1–1.5°C from December to February, with around 13 rain days and only 63 hours of sunshine in December. Frosty blue-sky days do happen, and they are magical. Waterproof shoes beat fashionable ones.
  • Toilets: some village public toilets need coins. Carry a few pounds in change, or buy a coffee.
  • Lunch: unless it's included, your guide will time lunch for the biggest stop, usually Bourton or Stow. Pubs fill quickly at 1pm, so eat early or grab something to go.
  • Light: the golden photos happen by 2:30pm in December, so take your Bibury and Arlington Row shots first.
  • What's open: most shops, pubs and tearooms trade through winter. Some attractions close or cut their hours; our guide to what's open in the Cotswolds in November lists them.

Tips for choosing the right tour

  1. Count the stops. In December, three or four is ideal. More stops means less time at each one, not more Cotswolds.
  2. Check the running order. If the villages come after a city (Oxford, Bath, Stratford), you may see them at dusk.
  3. Pick a departure you can reach easily. Victoria, South Kensington, Gloucester Road and Vauxhall Bridge Road are different starting points, so allow for 7:30–8:30am Tube times.
  4. Read the cancellation policy. Most tours listed here offer full refunds up to 24 hours before, and in winter that flexibility earns its price.
  5. Check the live calendar. If December dates are missing, the tour may not run in winter.
  6. Add a night if you can. A single overnight in a pub with rooms changes the whole trip, and walkers get a frosty morning on the footpaths before the day-trippers arrive.
