The short answer: yes, as long as you know what to expect. In November 2026 the villages, pubs, market towns and countryside walks are all there, and the coach crowds have largely gone. Some big-name houses and gardens close for the winter or open only at weekends, you lose the light around 4pm, and the footpaths get muddy. Late November is the best part of the month: the Christmas light trails at Blenheim Palace, Sudeley Castle and Westonbirt are open, and Broadway and Cirencester hold their festive shopping evenings. Plan it as a trip for cosy pubs and lantern-lit evenings, not a summer garden tour, and November suits it well.

Our pick for a November day trip from London

From London: Full-Day Cotswolds Small-Group Tour

★ 4.8 · 5,300+ reviews · From $105 · Go Tours UK · Burford, Bibury, Bourton and Stow

A 16-seat minibus from South Kensington that keeps to four villages and is back by about 5:45pm, so the stops fall in the daylight you have in November. Lunch is not included, and children under 7 cannot join.

Whether everything in the Cotswolds shuts in winter is one of the questions we hear most. It doesn't. The Cotswolds is a landscape of real villages and towns, and what changes in November is the seasonal layer on top: some National Trust houses, a handful of private gardens and the summer-only attractions close. Below are the pros and cons, then a checklist of what's open and closed in November 2026.

Always check each attraction's official website before you travel. Winter hours change at short notice for weather, conservation work and private events.

The pros of visiting the Cotswolds in November

  • Far fewer crowds. Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe get their streets back on November weekdays, and you can photograph Arlington Row without a queue of tour groups.
  • Lower prices, mostly. After October half-term, many pubs with rooms, hotels and holiday cottages drop to off-peak rates. Blenheim's Christmas opening and race weekend in Cheltenham are the exceptions (more below).
  • Late autumn colour. In a typical year, the colour at Batsford Arboretum and Westonbirt runs through October and can last into early November. The maples turn first, and native trees often hold their leaves a little longer.
  • Log fires and frosty walks. Sunday roasts by the fire and frosty morning walks are what the Cotswolds does best, and both suit short days.
  • Christmas starts early. Light trails, lights switch-ons and the first Christmas markets arrive from mid-November, weeks before the December rush.

The cons

  • Short days. In Cheltenham, sunset is about 4.42pm on 1 November and about 4.03pm by 30 November. Day length falls from about 9 hours 40 minutes on 1 November to about 8 hours 10 minutes by the end of the month.
  • Seasonal closures. Sudeley's castle and gardens, Kelmscott Manor and Chastleton House close for daytime visits at the end of October or the start of November. Snowshill and Hidcote drop to weekends or part-weeks.
  • Wet, muddy paths. November is often the wettest month on the high wolds, so expect mud on the footpaths.
  • Thinner public transport. Rural buses run less often in the evenings and on Sundays, which makes a car-free trip harder, though not impossible.
  • Grey days. Some days the sky stays flat grey and the famous golden stone looks more oatmeal than honey.

November 2026 events in and around the Cotswolds

  • Bonfire Night, Thursday 5 November. Village displays are usually held on the nearest weekend. Guiting Power's bonfire and fireworks on the playing field is a local favourite (2026 date not yet confirmed). The steam railway's fireworks train runs on 7 November.
  • Cheltenham Racecourse, The November Meeting: Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November 2026. Countryside Day, Super Saturday (Paddy Power Gold Cup) and Carnival Sunday. Book accommodation in and around Cheltenham early for this weekend.
  • Christmas at Blenheim Palace, from Friday 13 November. Light trail, decorated palace interiors and a Christmas market in the Great Court.
  • Broadway Christmas lights switch-on, expected Saturday 14 November (reported by a local listing; not yet confirmed by the organisers, so check closer to the date).
  • Upton House "Christmas with the Muses", from 14 November.
  • Sudeley Castle Spectacle of Light, from Friday 20 November. Prices, dogs, pushchairs and buses for all three trails are in our full light-trail comparison.
  • Broadway late-night Christmas shopping, Friday 27 November (and Friday 4 December), 4.30pm–8.30pm. The steam railway runs a special shuttle from Toddington to Broadway on both nights. See all the markets.
  • Christmas at Westonbirt, from Friday 27 November.
  • Cirencester Advent Market and lights switch-on, expected Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November (listed by a third-party guide; the town council had not published 2026 details when we checked). More than 100 stalls run from Castle Street up Cricklade Street and along the Market Place, and the lights switch on on Saturday evening.
  • Coming up in December: Cheltenham Christmas Market on the Promenade, 10–23 December 2026.
  • Already over: the Cheltenham Literature Festival runs in October, so it won't overlap with a November visit.

November weather and daylight

At Little Rissington, the Met Office station high on the wolds near Bourton and Stow, the 1991–2020 November averages are a mean maximum of 9.5°C and a mean minimum of 3.8°C. The station records 85mm of rain on 13.5 days with at least 1mm, about 4 air-frost days and just 73 hours of sunshine for the whole month. The valley towns run slightly milder: Oxford, the station our month-by-month guide uses, averages a 10.9°C high and 72mm of rain in November.

Snow in November is unusual. A dusting on the high ground is possible in a cold snap, but don't plan around it. Frosty, clear mornings are more common, and they are the most photogenic days of the month.

Daylight: the UK clocks go back on 25 October 2026, so the whole of November is on GMT. In Cheltenham, sunrise is about 7.03am on 1 November and sunset about 4.42pm. By 30 November it is about 7.53am and 4.03pm.

What to pack: waterproof walking boots (not trainers), a proper waterproof jacket, warm layers, a hat and gloves for the evening light trails, and a head torch if you might walk back from the pub on unlit lanes. For December weather and the full packing list, see our guide to Cotswolds weather in November and December.

Getting there and around in November

By car (easiest). A car is still the most flexible way to see the Cotswolds in winter, especially for Snowshill, Hidcote and Chedworth, which sit down narrow lanes. Leave extra time on frosty mornings, and avoid single-track lanes after dark if you're not used to them.

By train. Great Western Railway's Cotswold Line runs direct from London Paddington to Kingham (fastest about 1hr 16min) and Moreton-in-Marsh (fastest 1hr 24min). Cheltenham Spa, and Kemble for Cirencester, are other useful gateways. There are no GWR trains at Paddington on 28–29 November 2026, so plan around that weekend.

By bus. The Pulhams 801 links Cheltenham, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow and Moreton-in-Marsh. It runs a year-round Sunday service, but Sunday buses finish earlier. Check the current timetable before relying on it, and don't count on buses to get you back from an evening light trail.

By day tour from London. Small-group day tours run through the winter. A November tour gets you roughly 9–10 hours of daylight, and some of that goes on the drive, so pick a tour that covers two or three villages properly instead of five in a rush. The Go Tours UK small-group tour from South Kensington keeps to four villages and is back in London by about 5:45pm. If you'd rather skip the drive out of London, take the train to Moreton-in-Marsh and join Go Cotswolds' day tour from the station, which its operator says runs through December. We compare every option in our guide to Cotswolds day trips from London in winter.

Where to stay in November

  • Pubs with rooms: our top pick for November. Dinner by the fire, a short walk up the stairs, and no driving after dark.
  • Spa hotels: ideal for wet days, when a pool and a treatment room beat a muddy footpath.
  • Holiday cottages: good value after half-term, especially for longer stays. Look for one with a wood burner.

Book early for the November Meeting weekend (13–15 November) and for late-November weekends near Blenheim and Cheltenham.

A sample November day, planned around the light

This example is for a Saturday in late November with a car.

  • 9.00am: coffee and a stroll in Bourton-on-the-Water before the day-trippers arrive.
  • 10.00am: walk the short footpath to Lower Slaughter (allow about an hour, and wear boots).
  • 11.30am: drive to Stow-on-the-Wold to browse the antique shops and see the yew-framed door of St Edward's Church.
  • 1.00pm: a long pub lunch by a fire.
  • 2.30pm: Broadway Tower for the view while the light lasts, then down into Broadway village as the Christmas lights come on.
  • From 4.45pm: head to Sudeley Castle's Spectacle of Light in Winchcombe (book ahead), or drive to Blenheim for its Christmas light trail.

As a rule of thumb, do the outdoor sights that depend on a view before 2.30pm, and save towns, pubs and light trails for after dark.

Who November suits, and who should skip it

November is great for couples after a cosy break, walkers who don't mind mud, photographers chasing frost and low light, families heading to the light trails, racing fans, and anyone who wants the villages without the crowds.

Skip November if you're set on seeing the gardens in full bloom (come May to July), you want to tour lots of National Trust interiors, or you can't drive and need late or frequent buses. For the rest of the year, see our guide to the best time to visit the Cotswolds.
